P-1A Visa

The P-1A Visa is a non-immigrant visa designed for individual athletes and athletic teams who are internationally recognized for excellence. This visa allows foreign athletes to compete in the United States at a professional or amateur level, individually or as part of a team.

The P-1A visa is typically granted for up to five years for individual athletes and one year for teams, with extensions available if necessary.

How to Apply for P-1A Visa

  • Employer or Agent Files Form I-129 with USCIS: A U.S. employer, sports league, or sponsor submits Form I-129 with supporting documents proving the applicant’s international recognition. USCIS typically takes 2-6 months, but Premium Processing (15 days) is available.
  • Provide Supporting Evidence: Documents proving the applicant’s athletic achievements, such as official rankings, awards and titles, contracts with professional teams, letters of endorsement from sports organizations, and media coverage and expert testimonials.
  • Wait for USCIS Approval: If approved, USCIS issues Form I-797 (Approval Notice).
  • Apply for a Visa at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate: Complete Form DS-160 and schedule a visa interview. Bring valid passport, Form I-797 approval notice, proof of international recognition in sports, and employment contract or invitation letter from U.S. teams or leagues.
  • Enter the U.S. & Begin Work: If approved, the applicant receives a P-1A visa stamp and can enter the U.S. to train, compete, and participate in major sporting events.

Eligibility Criteria for a P-1A Visa

To qualify for a P-1A Visa, applicants must:

Internationally Recognized Athlete

Demonstrate a high level of achievement in their sport.

Competing at a Distinguished Level

Participate in a significant U.S. competition or league that requires international recognition.

U.S. Employer or Sponsor

A U.S. organization, employer, or sports league must file a petition on their behalf.

Athletic Criteria (at least two)

Significant participation in a major U.S. sports league, previous international competitions with a national team, record of athletic achievements, recognition by media/organizations/experts, or notable rankings, awards, or contracts.
